Mathematics
At Wilcombe Primary School, we adopt a mastery approach in teaching Mathematics to support the delivery of the three key aims of the National Curriculum: Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving. These three principles underpin the learning that takes place in our classrooms and are at the heart of all teaching, supporting the belief that every child can achieve in Mathematics.
We aspire to encourage all children to be independent, confident and competent mathematicians, who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world.
Our Curriculum:
In every classroom you will see:
- White Rose Maths is used to support the delivery of lessons, which are then enhanced or adapted where appropriate.
- A sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning. Flashback 4 is used at the beginning of every lesson to enable opportunities for retrieval practice.
- Fluency embedded into each lesson, with additional practice sessions built into the curriculum, outside of our Maths lesson, to ensure that all children are competent with a range of number facts and the four operations.
- Use of manipulatives and images to expose the mathematical structure of the mathematical concepts being taught.
- Use of key vocabulary to enhance opportunities for talk and discussion to encourage children to verbalise their thinking.

Assessment of learning is carried out during each lesson to ensure that children do not fall behind, and to inform future planning. As well as this, children are assessed using White Rose assessments at the end of unit of learning of work and at the end of each term.
